Dhaka, Oct 23 (V7N) — Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman has said that failing to try the accused, including Sheikh Hasina, in the crimes against humanity case would be an injustice to the martyrs and injured of the July genocide.
He made the remarks on Thursday (October 23) while presenting the final day of arguments against Sheikh Hasina and three others at the International Crimes Tribunal-1.
“I believed Sheikh Hasina would face justice because she once told others that if they had courage, they should face justice. But she did not mean it from the heart. If she truly had courage, she would have returned to the country to face trial,” said the Attorney General.
He further stated, “If these accused are not punished, the lives of countless others in Bangladesh will be at risk. Without justice, our people will remain cowards in the dustbin of history. I expect the highest punishment for them.”
Following his statement, the tribunal said that justice will be ensured and that both sides will receive justice at any cost.
Earlier, 54 witnesses, including the families of martyrs, injured victims, and doctors, testified in the case. Their testimonies revealed details of the July massacre, atrocities, and enforced disappearances and killings during the Awami League era.
Former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun, who served during the July–August massacre, also testified as a state witness, disclosing key events behind the genocide and identifying those who ordered and executed the attacks.
The prosecution maintains that the evidence presented is sufficient to prove the accused’s guilt in any court of law worldwide.
