Dhaka, Oct 26 (V7N) — Information and Broadcasting Advisor Mahfuz Alam has said that the government will soon enact a journalist protection law, emphasizing that it will ensure the safety and welfare of media professionals while maintaining accountability in the sector.
He made the remarks at a press conference organized by the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) on Sunday.
Mahfuz Alam said, “If a journalist protection law is enacted, the allies of fascism will also get protection — those who are still sitting in different houses and doing unethical journalism. Nevertheless, the government will move forward to enact the law quickly.”
Addressing the issue of irregular wages in media organizations, the advisor warned that institutions failing to pay salaries and allowances properly will have their government accreditation and facilities revoked. He also stated that the government plans to introduce a minimum entry-level salary for journalists, saying that “a salary of Tk 12,000 or 15,000 is unacceptable for journalists.”
Mahfuz Alam further informed that a policy framework for online platform accountability will be finalized by next week. Discussions will also be held with the Election Commission to ensure journalists’ safety during the upcoming elections.
He urged all media outlets to take proactive measures against rumors and misinformation, especially during politically sensitive periods.
The advisor also revealed that the Ministry of Information plans to form a Media Commission — an independent body free from government control. The commission will oversee newspaper circulation, television broadcasting, and the protection of media workers’ interests.
