Dhaka, Dec 19 (V7N) – The passing of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Manch, has sparked grief and outrage across Bangladesh. Cities including Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, Jhalokathi, and Netrokona have seen widespread expressions of sorrow, protest, and solidarity. As of early Thursday morning, students and citizens remained actively engaged in vigils and demonstrations.
At Dhaka University, multiple mourning processions and protest gatherings were organized following the news of Hadi’s death. Around 10:30 PM on Thursday, students marched from the TSC and residential halls to the Raju Sculpture, joined by leaders of various student organizations including DUCSU Vice President Sadiq Qayem and GSSM leader Farhad. Participants included students from Dhaka Alia and Qawmi Madrasas, many of whom were visibly emotional, with some breaking down in tears.
Another procession led by Jatiyo Chhatra Shakti moved from TSC to Shahbagh, with leaders such as former Coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement Abdul Qader, President Zahid Ahsan, and General Secretary Abu Baker Majumdar in attendance. AB Zubair, organizer of the July Unity Movement and DUCSU Social Service Secretary, addressed the gathering at Raju Sculpture, highlighting concerns over Hadi’s prior security warnings and calling for accountability.
At Shahbagh, Jatiyo Nagorik Party leader Nahid Islam joined the protest around 11:45 PM, delivering slogans denouncing the killers and foreign interference. Students of Jagannath University also staged a protest march from the main gate at 10:45 PM, joined by members of Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Shakti, leftist coalitions, and female dormitory students.
In Chattogram, a group of youth staged a sit-in outside the Indian Assistant High Commission in Khulshi around 11:30 PM, chanting anti-Indian and anti-Awami League slogans. Police later dispersed the protesters.
The demonstrations reflect nationwide demands for swift justice, highlighting public grief over Hadi’s untimely death and concern for democratic activism in Bangladesh.
