Tangail, Jan 19 (V7N) — Muhammad Fauzul Kabir Khan, Advisor to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, on Monday said that a ‘yes’ vote in the upcoming referendum would open the door to rebuilding Bangladesh anew and compel government officials to become accountable and responsive to the people.
He made the remarks while inaugurating a ‘Vote Car’ campaign at Tangail Municipal Park on the occasion of the referendum.
Addressing the gathering, Fauzul Kabir Khan said that casting a ‘yes’ vote is essential to end what he described as a culture of enforced disappearances, killings and assassinations, and to carry out comprehensive reforms of the state structure. “This referendum is an opportunity to reform the country in a new way,” he said.
He emphasized that the forthcoming vote is not an ordinary election, noting that the nation holds high expectations. “This election will turn into a festival of democracy where people will be able to cast their votes freely according to their wishes,” he said, adding that elected representatives must perform their duties with a mindset of serving the people.
Referring to past incidents, the adviser said the country has witnessed several tragic events, including what he described as “sleep-killings,” the BDR carnage and the July mass uprising. He stressed the need to reorganize the state and restructure institutional power frameworks to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Fauzul Kabir Khan also expressed views on possible constitutional and political reforms, including the establishment of an upper house in parliament, strengthening cooperation and balance between the government and the opposition, and delegating certain powers to the president.
He noted that the final decision in the referendum rests with the people. “Whether the vote will be ‘yes’ or ‘no’ is up to the citizens. But if they want meaningful change, they must vote ‘yes’,” he said, describing the referendum as a chance to create a new roadmap for the state.
Deputy Commissioner Sharifa Haque and Superintendent of Police Shamsul Alam Sarkar, along with senior officials of the local administration, were present at the event.
