DHAKA, July 5, (v7n) – State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam today reaffirmed the government's commitment to transforming Bangladesh's migration sector into a skills-based, rights-based, and well-governed system, while seeking enhanced cooperation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The minister made the remarks when newly-appointed IOM Chief of Mission in Bangladesh, Dr. Laura Nicole Tomm-Bonde, paid a courtesy call on her at the foreign ministry, according to a press release.
During the meeting, the state minister reiterated Bangladesh's dedication as a Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) Champion Country to implementing the compact's objectives. She emphasized the government's priority on skills development, qualification recognition, ethical recruitment, migrant worker protection in host countries, expansion of regular migration pathways, and sustainable reintegration of returning migrants.
Shama appreciated IOM's continued technical assistance in strengthening Bangladesh's migration governance framework and called for increased support to advance the government's migration priorities.
Dr. Tomm-Bonde praised Bangladesh's leadership in migration governance and reaffirmed IOM's commitment to deepening cooperation in line with the government's vision and priorities. Both sides expressed hope that the Bangladesh-IOM partnership would be further strengthened to promote effective migration governance in the country.
