Dhaka, Jul 12 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has expressed deep shock and sorrow over the death of former Acting President, former Speaker of the National Parliament, language movement veteran and BNP National Standing Committee member Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar.

In a condolence message issued on Sunday (July 12), the Prime Minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.

In the message, Tarique Rahman described Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar as a wise, experienced, honest and dedicated statesman who made outstanding contributions to Bangladesh's political and democratic development throughout his long public career.

He noted that Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar served the nation with integrity, wisdom and responsibility as Acting President and Speaker of the National Parliament. He also held several key government positions, including Minister of Education, State Minister for Land, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, and State Minister for Public Works and Urban Development.

The Prime Minister said the nation would remember with profound respect his contribution to strengthening democratic institutions, promoting parliamentary culture and working for the welfare of the people through responsible governance.

Recalling his political life, Tarique Rahman said Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar remained steadfast in the ideals of Bangladeshi nationalism, democracy and the protection of people's rights. He never deviated from his principles despite prolonged political struggles, repression and adversity, and continued to uphold the BNP's nationalist ideals with wisdom, commitment and resilience.

The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the late leader's role in the anti-dictatorship movement and the democratic struggle over the past 17 years, saying his contribution to restoring democracy, voting rights and fundamental freedoms would be remembered with respect in the history of the BNP and in Bangladesh's democratic journey.

He said the country had lost an experienced politician, an accomplished parliamentarian, a prudent statesman and a true patriot with the passing of Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar.

The Prime Minister added that the late leader's ideals, honesty, wisdom and dedication to public service would continue to inspire future generations of politicians.

Concluding the message, Tarique Rahman prayed to Almighty Allah for the forgiveness and eternal peace of the departed soul and extended his deepest condolences to the bereaved family, relatives, colleagues, well-wishers and admirers of Barrister Zamir Uddin Sarkar.
