Kishoreganj, Aug 16 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said the BNP government wants to transform Bangladesh into a welfare-oriented state by taking long-term plans aimed at improving people's lives, particularly in rural areas.
He made the remarks on Sunday (August 16) after releasing and distributing fish fry in the old Brahmaputra River in Pakundia Upazila of Kishoreganj on the occasion of National Fisheries Day-2026.
The Prime Minister said the government wants to undertake plans and initiatives that will gradually change the fortunes of people across the country, especially those living in villages and upazilas.
He alleged that whenever the people of Bangladesh have given the BNP an opportunity to govern, some political groups have created disorder. He called on the people to resist those who obstruct development activities, create unrest on the streets and mislead the public with false information.
Speaking about the country's ongoing electricity crisis, Tarique Rahman said people in Dhaka and different districts and upazilas are currently suffering from power shortages.
He attributed the current electricity and fuel situation to what he described as the unplanned policies and decisions of the previous dictatorship, saying the people had removed that government.
The Prime Minister said the next session of the National Parliament will begin on August 27, and the government will present a 10-year plan to address the country's electricity crisis.
He also announced that the government has decided to provide free education for women up to the honours level, with all related expenses to be borne by the state.
Tarique Rahman is currently on his first visit to Kishoreganj since taking office. He is scheduled to participate in several programmes throughout the day before returning to Dhaka in the evening.
