Dhaka, Sep 17 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has directed the relevant authorities to give special attention to dengue prevention, while the government has decided to construct a Nazrul Mancha at Dhanmondi Lake to enhance the capital's aesthetics and promote cultural activities.
Administrators of Dhaka's two city corporations disclosed the decisions on Thursday (September 17) after a meeting with the Prime Minister at the Secretariat on the development of Dhanmondi and Gulshan lakes.
Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam said Dhanmondi Lake would be modernized as part of the government's broader plan to improve the capital's water bodies.
He said all but one or two restaurants currently located beside the lake would be removed as part of the development initiative.
Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Khan said waste management in the capital had improved to some extent, but the Prime Minister had instructed the authorities to make further improvements.
The city corporations also said they would provide necessary cooperation if the relevant agencies take action against illegal electricity connections in the areas concerned.
The latest decisions follow an earlier government initiative to restore and redevelop Dhanmondi and Gulshan lakes, improve their environmental conditions and address illegal waste-discharge lines. The government had also planned the construction of Nazrul Sarobar as part of the Dhanmondi Lake redevelopment project.
The government is also continuing efforts to improve Dhaka's environmental management and water bodies through coordinated action by the relevant agencies.
