Dhaka, Sep 20 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will leave Dhaka for New York on Monday night to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he is scheduled to deliver his first address to the assembly as prime minister on September 24.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam disclosed the details at a media briefing on Sunday regarding the Prime Minister’s upcoming UN visit.
The Prime Minister is expected to deliver his address in Bangla and highlight Bangladesh’s democratic transformation and the vision of a “New Bangladesh.” Climate change, global peace, development priorities and the Rohingya crisis are also expected to feature prominently during the visit.
During his stay in New York, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to hold a series of bilateral and high-level meetings with foreign leaders and senior officials. Meetings are expected to include Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Kuwait’s Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah, among others.
He will also participate in several high-level meetings focusing on issues including the Rohingya crisis, maternal health and climate change.
The Foreign Secretary said a 35-member delegation, including four ministers, will accompany the Prime Minister. The delegation will include the finance, foreign, tourism and law ministers.
The government has also requested the US authorities to take all necessary security measures for the Prime Minister during his stay in New York.
Tarique Rahman is scheduled to remain in New York until September 25 and depart for Dhaka that night. His visit has been shortened from an earlier plan that envisaged a longer stay in the United States.
The visit will mark Tarique Rahman’s first address to the UN General Assembly as Prime Minister of Bangladesh. The 81st session is being presided over by Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman.
