Dhaka, Sep 21 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left Dhaka early Monday for New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he is scheduled to deliver his first address to the world body as prime minister.
The Prime Minister, accompanied by his wife Dr. Zubaida Rahman and other members of his entourage, departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 6:05am on a Turkish Airlines flight, according to officials.
Tarique Rahman is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 24. Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam said the Prime Minister will speak in Bangla and highlight Bangladesh’s democratic renewal, rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development and economic cooperation.
The speech is also expected to cover youth and women’s empowerment, education and health, the Rohingya crisis, equitable use of modern technology and reform of the multilateral system.
During his stay in New York, the Prime Minister is scheduled to participate in several high-level meetings and hold bilateral talks with foreign leaders on the sidelines of the UNGA.
His programme includes meetings with the Crown Prince of Kuwait and the prime ministers of several countries, as well as engagements with the UN secretary-general, European Council president, World Bank president and senior UN officials.
Tarique Rahman is also scheduled to attend a reception hosted by US President Donald Trump for heads of state and government and their spouses. Economic diplomacy will feature in the visit, with meetings planned with senior representatives of Meta, Wall Street and other business organisations.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to leave New York for Dhaka on the night of September 25 after completing his UNGA engagements.
