New York, Sep 22 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sought continued international support for a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis and the dignified return of the displaced people to their homeland in Myanmar.
He made the call when Julie Bishop, Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on Myanmar, paid a courtesy call on him at the Hyatt Grand Central Hotel in New York on Tuesday (September 22).
The meeting focused on the prolonged Rohingya crisis and the need for an effective role by the international community in resolving the issue.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman stressed the importance of international cooperation to create conditions for the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingyas to Myanmar.
The discussion took place as the prime minister is in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, where the Rohingya crisis remains one of the key issues on Bangladesh’s agenda.
The meeting also highlighted the need for a sustainable solution to the crisis rather than relying solely on short-term humanitarian assistance.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN Irene Khan, Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin and Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam were present during the meeting.
On Wednesday (September 23), Bangladesh and The Gambia are scheduled to co-host a high-level UNGA side event on the Rohingya crisis, with the European Union as a co-sponsor.
The event is expected to renew international attention and support for resolving the crisis and creating conditions for the safe, voluntary and dignified return of Rohingyas to Myanmar.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to deliver his first address to the UN General Assembly on Thursday (September 24), with the Rohingya crisis among the major issues receiving attention during his New York visit.
