New York, Sep 24 (V7N)- Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York today, delivering his first speech at the world body's general debate as Bangladesh's head of government.
According to the schedule, the speech will be delivered in Bangla at around 3:00 AM Friday Bangladesh time, following Thursday night's session in New York. BSS previously reported that the prime minister was scheduled to address the general debate on September 24 and deliver the speech in Bangla.
Mahdi Amin, spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, provided the update during a briefing at the Hyatt Grand Central New York hotel in Manhattan.
The prime minister's UN address is expected to cover Bangladesh's democratic transformation, the rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development and economic cooperation. He is also expected to discuss youth and women's empowerment, education, health, the Rohingya crisis, technology and reform of the multilateral system.
On Thursday, Tarique Rahman is also scheduled to deliver the opening remarks at a high-level UN meeting on the existential threats posed by rising sea levels.
The United Nations has confirmed that the high-level plenary meeting on sea-level rise is being held at UN Headquarters in New York on September 24. The meeting will focus on international cooperation, political leadership and practical measures to address the growing impacts of sea-level rise.
Bangladesh's Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman, who is serving as president of the 81st UN General Assembly, will preside over the high-level meeting. The UN's official programme lists the meeting among the key events of the General Assembly's high-level week.
Tarique Rahman is also scheduled to participate in other UN-related engagements during his New York visit, including a side event on maternal and newborn health. His programme includes several bilateral and courtesy meetings with foreign leaders and senior officials of international organisations.
The UN General Assembly's 81st session is being held from September 22 to 28, with the general debate bringing together heads of state and government from around the world.
