Dhaka, August 13 — The interim government has announced the cancellation of the general holiday on August 15, traditionally observed as the National Day of Mourning in Bangladesh. This decision was communicated in a press release from the Office of the Chief Adviser, following a meeting of the Advisory Council chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday.

The press release stated that the decision was made with broad consensus during discussions between the Advisory Council and various political parties. On Monday, Dr. Yunus held a meeting at his official residence, Jamuna, with leaders from different political parties across the country.

The move comes after 35 student organizations, including the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Chhatra Dal, and Chhatra Shibir, convened at the TSC Auditorium of Dhaka University and unanimously decided not to observe August 15 as the National Day of Mourning. The decision marks a significant shift in the traditional observance of the day, which has been a national holiday commemorating the assassination of Bangladesh's founding father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and most of his family members in 1975.

The cancellation of the holiday reflects the evolving political landscape and the ongoing dialogue between the interim government and various factions in the country.
