Dhaka, Oct 18 (V7N) — Several companies supplying eggs are failing to meet the government-set price and demand in key markets like Kaptanbazar and Tejgaon, leading to continued price hikes in the capital. On Friday, traders reported a shortfall in supply, with only half the expected deliveries reaching the markets, resulting in consumer frustration.

Traders had expected around 1 to 2 million eggs to be delivered to Kaptanbazar and Karwan Bazar, but actual deliveries fell significantly short. Many wholesalers and retailers at Kaptanbazar returned empty-handed, leaving shelves without stock.

According to wholesalers, some suppliers are unwilling to comply with the government-mandated price of Tk 10.58 per egg, prompting a deliberate reduction in supply. While hawkers at Kaptanbazar have adjusted prices to align with government directives, Tejgaon vendors continue to charge higher rates.

Despite efforts to control prices in major markets, local grocery stores across Dhaka are still selling eggs at Tk 165 to Tk 170 per dozen, far above the regulated price. This has left consumers struggling with inflated costs, with little relief in sight.

Frustrated citizens argue that government oversight is required not just in large markets but also in neighbourhood shops to ensure fair pricing for all.
