Dhaka, Feb 04 (V7N) — Starting Thursday, February 6, 21 transport companies will introduce a 'counter system' bus service from Abdullahpur in the capital. Under this new system, a total of 2,610 buses will operate, all painted in the same pink colour for easy identification.

The announcement was made at a press conference on Tuesday morning at the Road Transport Owners' Association office in Bangla Motor. Saiful Alam, General Secretary of the association, stated that passengers will now buy tickets from designated counters before boarding the buses, ensuring a more structured and organized transport system.

He also mentioned that the initiative follows a decision taken in a meeting on December 19, 2024, chaired by an advisor to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges. In that meeting, it was decided that bus drivers should be contracted on a fortnightly or monthly basis instead of the previous trip-based contracts. This move is aimed at improving the working conditions for drivers and ensuring better service for passengers.

Additionally, to prevent encroachment while setting up bus stops in the capital, fares will be regulated as per government directives. However, fares may also be adjusted in accordance with the national budget.

Among those present at the press conference were Dhaka Road Transport Owners' Association President MA Baten, Treasurer ASM Ahmed Khokon, and Office Secretary Kazi Md. Jobair Masud.

This new system aims to reduce passenger suffering, ensure fair pricing, and bring discipline to Dhaka's public transport sector.
