Dhaka, Nov 05 (V7N)- Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Solaiman Tushar has issued a legal notice requesting the cancellation of certain admission quotas at Dhaka University (DU) for the academic year 2024-25. The notice, sent on Tuesday, November 5, seeks to eliminate quotas for grandchildren of freedom fighters, quotas reserved for children of teachers and officials, and the open quota for general admissions.

In addition to Barrister Tushar, other lawyers involved in issuing the notice include Barrister Mahdi Zaman Boni, Advocate Bayezid Hossain, and Advocate Shahed Siddiqui. The notice has been sent via email to several top university officials, including the Vice-Chancellor, Pro-VC (Administration), Pro-VC (Education), and the Registrar of Dhaka University.

The notice calls for maintaining a limited quota structure that would only reserve seats for a few categories:
- 5 percent quota for children of freedom fighters, martyred freedom fighters, and heroines of the Liberation War
- 1 percent for ethnic minorities
- 1 percent for persons with disabilities and members of the third gender.

The recipients have been given a five-day window to take action on the matter. If no action is taken, the lawyers plan to pursue legal measures, including filing a writ petition in the Supreme Court, to ensure that the proposed changes to the quota system are enforced.

This legal notice comes amid growing debates about university admission policies and the fairness of maintaining multiple quotas, with advocates arguing for a more merit-based system while preserving support for underrepresented groups. Dhaka University’s administration has yet to respond publicly to the notice.
