Barguna, Sept 11 (V7N) — A 2.9-kilogram hilsa was sold for Tk 17,000 at the BFDC Fish Landing Centre in Patharghata, Barguna, on Thursday.

The fish fetched nearly Tk 5,900 per kilogram at an auction, bringing the total price to Tk 17,000. Hilsa was also sold at Tk 2 lakh 36 thousand per maund at the landing centre.

The auction was held at the Patharghata BFDC Fish Landing Centre on Thursday, Sept. 10. A wholesaler from Khulna, purchasing on behalf of Palash New Al-Amin Fish Arat, bought the large hilsa.

The fish was caught in the net of fisherman Altab Mia of Tengra in Patharghata. He later brought the fish to the BFDC landing centre, where it was put up for auction.

Altab Mia said large hilsa of this size are now rarely being caught.

“I caught a large fish after a long time. I am happy to have caught it and hope the coming days will be better,” he said.

Golam Mostafa Chowdhury, president of the Barguna District Fishermen’s Trawler Owners’ Association, said the quantity of fish in rivers and the sea would increase if fishermen properly observed fishing bans.

He said this would also increase the chances of fishermen catching larger hilsa and other species in the future.
