Ukhiya, Aug 31 (V7N) – A man impersonating a military officer was arrested in the Kutupalong Rohingya refugee camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, on charges of fraud and impersonation. Authorities also recovered a black walkie-talkie from his possession. The suspect was handed over to Ukhiya Police Station and later produced before a Cox’s Bazar court on Saturday afternoon.
The arrested individual has been identified as Mohammad Yusuf Anwar, son of Salim Ullah from Purba Patabari village in Haldia Palong Union, Ukhiya upazila.
The arrest took place around 9:30 PM on Friday, August 29, in front of the Ansar checkpoint on the road near the Kutupalong Registered Camp. The operation was led by Sub-Inspector Mohammad Kamal Hossain of Ukhiya Police Station.
According to police sources, the case originated when Shamsul Ikram, a resident of Block E-60 in Camp No. 3, married a young woman named Swaif without the consent of her family. Her family, believing Anwar to be a military officer, sought his help in resolving the matter and requested him to "rescue" their daughter from Shamsul.
Trusting his false identity as an army officer, the family believed he would act as a legal arbitrator. Instead, Anwar reportedly attempted to exploit the situation for personal gain, continuing a pattern of deception.
Investigators say that Anwar had been impersonating a member of the military or claiming affiliation with a military intelligence unit called "ASU" to mediate family disputes in exchange for money. His fraudulent activities primarily targeted vulnerable Rohingya families within the camps.
A spokesperson for the Bangladesh Army clarified that military personnel are only present in the camps to assist with maintaining law and order. They warned that any civilian posing as a soldier or intelligence officer to engage in mediation or financial dealings is committing fraud. The military strongly denied any connection to such individuals and urged the public to remain vigilant.
Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zia Uddin confirmed that a case has been filed against the accused under case number 59, dated August 30, 2025.
