Jhalokathi, Aug 31 (V7N) — The body of Shamim Hossain, a 19-year-old college student who went missing while bathing, was recovered from a canal in Putiakhali’s Jhalobari Madrasa area under Rajapur Upazila nearly 24 hours after he disappeared.

Shamim, son of local timber trader Manik, was a Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinee this year from Baroiya Degree College.

According to local sources, Shamim went to bathe in the canal as part of his daily routine on Friday afternoon. While attempting to lift a traditional fish trap, known as a “chunga,” he was reportedly swept away by strong currents in a deeper section of the canal.

Family members and residents immediately began a search, later joined by the Rajapur Fire Service diving team. Despite intensive efforts, his body could not be located on Friday night.

On Saturday around noon, locals spotted Shamim’s body floating at the same spot in the canal and informed police. Authorities recovered the body and handed it over to the family.

Family members reported that Shamim knew how to swim but suffered from epilepsy. It is suspected that he may have had a seizure while in the water, which led to his drowning.

The incident has cast a pall of mourning over the community.
