Kurigram, Nov 05 (V7N) — Despite the recent construction of a bridge in the char area of Chilmari Upazila, over 2,000 residents are still facing significant travel challenges due to the absence of a proper connecting road. Built in Bailamandiyarkhata village of Chilmari Union, the bridge remains largely unusable, as horse-drawn carriages, which are essential for transporting goods in the area, cannot navigate the incomplete approach paths.

The bridge, referred to locally as the "Udrain," was constructed as part of a non-wage project funded by the Project Implementation Department during the 2023-24 fiscal year. However, despite the completion of the main structure, the lack of a connecting road has severely limited its functionality, leaving locals questioning the project’s usefulness.

Residents report that the soil on both sides of the bridge has been shifting and collapsing, creating a further obstacle for any potential roadwork. "What’s the benefit of building such an expensive bridge if it can’t be used?" one local resident commented, expressing frustration over the stalled development.

Efforts to contact Shahana Begum, the reserved female member and project chairman, have been unsuccessful. She initially responded but declined to provide comments and has since been unreachable.

Upazila Project Implementation Officer Md. Mosharraf Hossain acknowledged the issue, stating, "I am coordinating with the chairman to secure soil for the connecting road. Over two lakhs were allocated for the two U-drains, but additional resources will be needed to complete the access paths."

Local residents are hopeful that prompt action will be taken to establish a connecting road, allowing the new bridge to serve its intended purpose and ease transportation challenges in the char area.
