Jhenaidah, Dec 01 (V7N) — Over the past four months, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained 950 individuals at the Maheshpur border in Jhenaidah for attempting to cross into India illegally. Among the detainees are a former minister of the ousted Awami League government, an ex-MP, Chhatra League cadres, a jail escapee, and rebel Ansar members, as well as individuals from the Rohingya community.
According to a statement issued by the Maheshpur 58 BGB Battalion's media cell, the arrests followed the July uprising on August 5, which saw an increase in attempts at illegal border crossings. The statement noted that the detainees include high-profile figures such as Sadhan Chandra Chand, a former minister, and three Chhatra League members.
Additionally, an Ansar member involved in a rebellion at the Secretariat was among those detained. BGB reported that at least 855 Bangladeshi citizens, including women and children, were arrested over the past three months.
In a notable development, 28 Indian nationals, including one Indian police officer, were also apprehended for illegal border activities. Moreover, 20 Rohingya individuals fleeing Myanmar were detained at the Maheshpur border.
In the last 24 hours, the BGB conducted operations in Matila, Khosalpur, Polianpur, Baghadanga, Shyamkur, and Bikhaghat border areas, resulting in the arrest of 47 individuals, including 12 women, 19 men, and 16 children. All detainees are Bangladeshi citizens, the BGB confirmed.
To curb the rising illegal activities, the BGB has intensified patrols and intelligence-based operations across key border areas. Their vigilance aims to ensure national security and prevent further unlawful crossings.
