Bandarban, Jan 24 (V7N) – Two Bangladeshi nationals were seriously injured in a landmine explosion near the Bandarban-Myanmar border early Friday morning. One of the victims reportedly lost a leg in the incident.
The explosion occurred near Pillar No. 47-48 in the Fultali and Ashartali areas of Naikshongchhari upazila. The injured, identified as Ali Hoshen (35) and Md. Arif Ullah from Ashartali Ward No. 8, were rescued by locals and admitted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for treatment.
According to locals, the two men had crossed into Myanmar illegally, reportedly to bring back cattle. While in Myanmar territory, they triggered a landmine allegedly planted by the Arakan Army and the Myanmar military, resulting in serious injuries.
Shamshul Alam, a former member of Ward No. 9 of Naikshongchhari Sadar Union, confirmed that the injured men were rescued and brought to safety after the incident.
Naikshongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md. Mazharul Islam also acknowledged the incident, though further details on the circumstances leading to the explosion are yet to be disclosed.
Tensions along the Bandarban-Myanmar border remain high, with frequent reports of violence, cross-border shelling, and landmine threats. This latest incident highlights the dangers faced by locals who cross the border, often in search of economic opportunities despite the risks.
Authorities have yet to comment on any measures being taken to address such incidents or prevent further cross-border injuries.
