Pabna, Mar 24 (V7N)– A court in Pabna's Faridpur Upazila has sentenced a man to life imprisonment and fined him 100,000 taka for the rape of a child.
Judge Mizanur Rahman of the Pabna Women and Child Abuse Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict on Monday, March 24.
"A court in Pabna's Faridpur upazila has sentenced a man to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 100,000 for raping a child," a court official confirmed.
The convicted individual, Nazmul Hossain (29), is the son of the late Abdul Latif alias Ledu, residing in Khalishadah village within Faridpur Upazila Sadar.
According to the case details, on April 2, 2022, at approximately 6:30 a.m., a sixth-grade student of Banwarinagar Alim Madrasa was en route to her private school when she was forcibly abducted by Nazmul Hossain at Khalishadah Wabda Dam. He then took her to a nearby abandoned house and raped her.
"According to the case report, the 6th grade student of Banwarinagar Alim Madrasa in Faridpur Upazila Sadar was going to private school as usual on April 2, 2022, at around 6:30 am. When the child reached Khalishadah Wabda Dam, an unknown person forcibly grabbed the child, took her to the abandoned house of Shariful Islam nearby and raped her," a court document states.
The child's mother filed a case on the same day. Following an investigation, Nazmul Hossain was identified, arrested in Sirajganj four days after the incident, and brought before the court.
After hearing the evidence presented, the court delivered its verdict on Monday.
"The court judge announced the verdict on Monday after hearing the evidence," a court reporter confirmed.
Advocate Nazmul Hasan Shaheen, representing the government, expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating that justice has been served.
"Expressing satisfaction with the verdict, Advocate Nazmul Hasar Shaheen said, 'Justice has been established through this verdict. We are happy with this order of the court,'" a legal spokesperson said.
Conversely, Advocate Abul Kalam Azad Rentu, representing the defendant, expressed dissatisfaction and announced their intention to appeal the verdict to the High Court.
"However, the defendant's advocate Abul Kalam Azad Rentu expressed dissatisfaction. He said, 'My client has been deprived of justice through this verdict. We will appeal to the High Court. I hope my client will get justice there,'" Rentu stated.
The verdict highlights the court's commitment to addressing cases of sexual assault against children and ensuring justice for the victims.
