Tangail, Mar 24 (V7N) – Maryam Mukaddas, also known as Mishti, has had her bail application rejected by a Tangail court on Monday. She is accused of forcibly occupying the residence of former MP and Tangail District Awami League General Secretary Johaherul Islam and attempting to establish a "madman's asylum."
"A court on Monday rejected the bail application of Maryam Mukaddas alias Mishti, who was arrested for occupying the house of former MP and Tangail District Awami League General Secretary Johaherul Islam and opening a 'madman's asylum,'" a court official confirmed.
Mishti, a coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, is currently detained in Tangail prison. Her lawyers' plea for bail was denied by Senior Judicial Magistrate Md. Golam Mahbub Khan of the Tangail Sadar Amli Court.
The charges against Mishti stem from a series of incidents, including:
February 6: Mishti and her followers allegedly used an excavator to demolish the district Awami League office.
Subsequent vandalism and looting of the houses of the recently deceased district Awami League president Fazlur Rahman Khan, Johaherul Islam, and former municipal mayor Jamilur Rahman.
Public announcements of plans to vandalize and occupy the houses of other Awami League leaders, intending to convert them into old age homes, lunatic asylums, and orphanages.
March 8: Mishti allegedly broke into Johaherul Islam's house in Akurtakur Para, bringing 18 mentally unstable individuals and declaring it a "madman's asylum."
"She brought 18 mentally unstable men and women there. She announced the opening of a 'madman's asylum' in that house," a police report stated.
Law enforcement, under an executive magistrate, evicted the individuals from the house that night. Mishti was initially released on bail. However, following further announcements of planned occupations, Johaherul Islam's wife filed a case on March 9, leading to Mishti's re-arrest. She was subsequently remanded in custody for questioning.
"Jawaherul Islam's wife filed a case against him on the night of March 9. The police arrested him that night. He was taken into remand for seven days in two phases and questioned by the police," a legal source confirmed.
The court's decision to deny bail indicates the seriousness of the charges against Mishti and the ongoing legal proceedings.
