Tangail, Mar 24 (V7N)– A routine client pickup turned deadly in Basail, Tangail, as Ranju Khandaker (35), an employee of a drug addiction treatment center, was allegedly beaten to death during a confrontation.
Khandaker succumbed to his injuries on Sunday night, March 23, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Dhaka. The incident unfolded on Saturday night, March 22, at the residence of Monir Khan in the Kashil Paschimpara area.
"An employee of a drug addiction treatment center named Ranju Khandaker (35) has been accused of being beaten to death in Basail, Tangail," a police report confirms.
Ranju Khandaker was an employee of the Brij Drug Addiction Treatment Center in Tangail city. The center had been contacted by Monir Khan to admit his son, Farid Khan, who was reportedly struggling with drug addiction.
"Police and local accounts indicate that Monir Khan contacted the treatment center to admit his drug-addicted son, Farid Khan. Six employees from the Brij Drug Addiction Treatment Center arrived at Monir Khan's residence on Saturday night to transport Farid," a police spokesperson stated.
As the treatment center employees attempted to take Farid into custody, he allegedly screamed, prompting intervention from neighbors. The situation escalated rapidly, with individuals identified as Palash, Ripon, and Taleb Khan, along with others, reportedly launching a violent attack.
"Later, while taking Monir's son Farid out of the house, Palash, Ripon and Taleb Khan, along with some people from the neighboring house, came forward when he screamed. Later, Farid, Palash, Ripon and Taleb Khan, along with some people, launched an argumentative attack on the people of the Brij Drug Addiction Treatment Center. At that time, Ranju Khandaker, an employee of the drug addiction treatment center, fell to the ground and was beaten and seriously injured," a local witness reported.
Ranju Khandaker sustained critical injuries during the altercation and was initially transported to Tangail General Hospital before being transferred to Dhaka for advanced medical care. Tragically, he died from his injuries. Four other treatment center employees were also injured in the attack.
"Ranju Khandaker died at a hospital in Dhaka on Sunday (March 23) night while undergoing treatment. Later, his body was brought to Basail Police Station on Monday (March 24) morning. Police sent his body to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy," police confirmed.
Local residents allege that Farid and Palash, who are implicated in the assault, are known drug dealers in the area.
Khandaker Mujibur Rahman Tapan, the owner of the Brij Drug Addiction Treatment Center, confirmed the incident and stated that a formal complaint has been filed with the police.
"Khandaker Mujibur Rahman Tapan, owner of Brij Drug Addiction Treatment Center in Tangail city, said, 'His father Monir Khan applied to us to send drug addict Farid to Brij Drug Addiction Treatment Center. In that context, six people from our drug addiction treatment center went to their house to bring Farid. When they tried to bring Farid there, our people were suddenly attacked. Ranju died while undergoing treatment after being injured in the attack. Four more people were injured in the incident. A case is under process regarding the matter,'" Tapan stated.
