Dhaka, Feb 23 (V7N) – Police have arrested Rumit Ayat Sahida, 25, organizing secretary of the Netrakona district unit of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, from Dhanmondi in the capital.
According to police sources, she was detained on the morning of February 21 while visiting Dhanmondi 32 to place flower at the historic residence associated with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. She was later produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka, which ordered her to be sent to jail.
Case documents state that under General Diary (Day CC) No. 637/25, dated November 30, police on duty at the Dhanmondi Model Police Station received confidential information in the late afternoon that several members of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and its affiliated bodies had gathered on Road No. 28 (old), 15 (new), near the entrance to the Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Institute on Mirpur Road. They were allegedly organizing a procession with the intent to conduct propaganda against the country’s interim government.
Police alleged that the group chanted anti-government slogans in public, aiming to tarnish the image of the current interim administration. In connection with the case, Rumit Ayat Sahida was shown arrested on the morning of February 21 from Road No. 32 under Dhanmondi Police Station.
Family members of Rumit said she is a student at a private university in Dhaka. They claimed she had gone to Dhanmondi 32 to pay tribute on February 21 when she was detained and subsequently handed over to the court.
It may be noted that Rumit was recently seen attending several public programs alongside film actress Bubly. The investigation into the case is ongoing, police said.
