SYLHET, April 11(V7N) — The government has inaugurated a ‘Farmers’ Market’ in Sylhet, aimed at reducing middlemen’s influence, ensuring fair prices for farmers, and providing safe food at affordable rates for consumers.
Commerce, Industry, Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir formally launched the initiative near Tilagarh Point on Saturday morning. Organized jointly by the Sylhet District Administration and the Department of Agricultural Extension, the market operates under the slogan “Safe and fresh products directly from farmers.”
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the minister said agricultural products often change hands multiple times before reaching consumers, leading to unreasonable price hikes. The Krishaker Haat will reduce these stages, creating a win‑win situation for both farmers and consumers. He emphasized that direct farmer‑consumer connectivity will bring relief to the market.
Key points from the minister’s remarks:
Direct sales: Farmers will sell products directly to consumers on specific days under district and upazila administration supervision.
Market transparency: Administrative monitoring will prevent extortion and unexpected expenses.
Supply chain modernization: Plans to digitize the entire supply chain, from import to retail, for easier surveillance and quick identification of manipulation.
TCB strengthening: Expanding Trading Corporation of Bangladesh activities to balance daily necessities markets.
Agricultural development: Expansion of irrigation and canal re‑excavation to boost production and stabilize markets.
The event was presided over by Sylhet Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarwar Alam, with Divisional Commissioner Khan Md. Reza‑un‑Nabi, BNP leaders, and officials from the Department of Agricultural Extension in attendance.
Sources said the market will be held every morning at designated locations, offering farmers fair prices and consumers safe, fresh products at lower costs.
