Khagrachari, Sep 22 (V7N)- The 72-hour blockade of roads and waterways entered its second day on Sunday, in protest of the recent attacks, arson, and violence in Khagrachari and Rangamati. While no long-distance vehicles were seen leaving Khagrachari in the morning, a few light vehicles were observed moving within the city as the day progressed.

The blockade was initially called by a group of Jumma students during a gathering in Dhaka last Friday. In support of this, the regional political organization United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) announced their backing. Despite the blockade, there have been no reports of active picketing, and the district remains calm with increased security measures in place.

On Saturday, Home Affairs Adviser Dr. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury led a high-level government delegation to visit both Khagrachari and Rangamati. The delegation held discussions with political leaders, civil society members, and law enforcement officials, urging peaceful coexistence amid the rising tensions.

The unrest began last Wednesday when a man named Mamun was beaten to death on allegations of theft in Khagrachari Sadar. This sparked violent incidents in Dighinala and Khagrachari Sadar, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and multiple injuries. Several shops were also set ablaze in Dighinala, further escalating tensions in the area.

The situation remains under close watch as the blockade continues, and authorities work to maintain order in the region.
