Dhaka, Nov 27 (V7N) – The Academic Council of Dhaka University has canceled the MPhil admission of Golam Rabbani, former general secretary of the now-banned Chhatra League, after confirming fraudulent practices in his enrollment. The decision implies that his candidacy in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections may be considered invalid, potentially nullifying his claim to the GS position.

The decision was finalized on Wednesday during a meeting of the Academic Council at the Nawab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Building, following recommendations from the University Syndicate. Faculty members, including Professor Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Academic Council member, and Proctor Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, confirmed the development.

Proctor Ahmed explained that the Academic Council’s cancellation of Rabbani’s student status automatically renders his participation in DUCSU elections legally invalid. However, the final decision on whether the GS post itself is nullified will rest with the University Syndicate.

The matter dates back to the DUCSU elections held on February 5, 2019. Following complaints filed by GS candidate Rashed Khan and Dhaka University branch convener of the Student Rights Committee, Md. Sanaullah Haque, the University formed an investigation committee.

On September 16, 2025, the committee’s report recommended the temporary cancellation of the studentship, which was forwarded to the Academic Council for final approval. On Wednesday, the Council formally canceled the admission of Golam Rabbani along with two other students, Mehjabin Haque and Fahmida Tasnim, from the Department of Criminology.

Professor Siddiqur Rahman Khan stated that the admissions were obtained through fraudulent means, violating the University’s established rules. The Academic Council’s mandate covers the cancellation of admission only and not electoral positions. Nonetheless, without a valid studentship, participation in DUCSU elections or holding office is inherently invalid.

The University Syndicate will make the final determination regarding the GS post following the Academic Council’s ruling.
