Rangamati, Dec 21 (V7N) — A tourist died after drowning in Kaptai Lake while kayaking during a leisure trip to Rangamati. The deceased was identified as Md Ifrat Uddin, 26, son of Wasim Uddin, a resident of Nazirabazar area under Ward No. 33 of South Dhaka City Corporation in Old Dhaka.
Rangamati Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Jasim Uddin confirmed the incident.
According to local sources, Ifrat Uddin arrived in Rangamati early Saturday morning with his friends. Later, they traveled by boat to a pre-booked resort named Swarnadwip Island, located in the Balukhali area of Rangamati Sadar upazila. After reaching the resort, the group entered Kaptai Lake for kayaking at around 9:30 am.
While other members of the group were wearing life jackets, Ifrat Uddin reportedly did not put one on. At one point during the activity, the kayak carrying him capsized, causing him to fall into the water and submerge.
Following the incident, the matter was immediately reported to the Rangamati Fire Service. A rescue team led by Fire Service team leader Gias Uddin arrived at the scene at around 9:50 am and began a search operation. At approximately 10:15 am, divers recovered the body of Ifrat Uddin from Kaptai Lake, confirmed Fire Service officials.
OC Md Jasim Uddin said the body has been sent to Rangamati General Hospital for post-mortem examination, and an unnatural death case is currently under process in connection with the incident.
The tragic death has cast a shadow of grief among local residents. Concerned authorities and locals have once again emphasized the importance of strictly following safety guidelines, including the mandatory use of life jackets during boat trips and water sports. The incident serves as a stark reminder that awareness and adherence to safety measures are crucial to preventing such fatal accidents.
