Dhaka, Mar 16 (V7N) – Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon on Monday said the government has decided to appoint new vice-chancellors to seven public universities across the country, including University of Dhaka, University of Rajshahi and University of Chittagong.

He also announced that a new chairman will be appointed to the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh.

The minister made the announcement at a press conference held at the ministry’s conference room in Dhaka, adding that gazette notifications will be issued soon after completing the necessary formalities.

According to the decision, A B M Obaidul Islam, a professor of the Physics Department at the University of Dhaka and currently vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Open University, has been nominated as the new VC of Dhaka University.

Earlier, DU Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan submitted his resignation on February 22.

Meanwhile, Mamun Ahmed, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka, has been nominated as the new chairman of the University Grants Commission.

The education minister said the decision was taken after the current UGC chairman SMA Faiz sought relief from his duties citing physical illness.

The minister also announced appointments of vice-chancellors at six other universities.

Among them, Md Faridul Islam will serve as the new VC of the University of Rajshahi, while Rais Uddin, chairman of the Islamic Studies Department and president of the teachers’ association at Jagannath University, has been nominated as its VC.

In addition, Siddiqur Rahman Khan has been nominated as the VC of Bangladesh Open University.

Md Nurul Islam, the current Pro-VC of National University Bangladesh, has been nominated as the VC of Dhaka Central University.

Besides, Md Masud has been nominated as the new VC of Khulna University of Engineering & Technology, while Mohammad Al-Forkan has been nominated as the VC of the University of Chittagong.
