Dhaka, Jan 17 (V7N)— Journalists and media owners gathered today to protest attacks on freedom of expression and democratic values while emphasizing the need for independent, responsible, and courageous journalism.
The media meet was held at the Krishibid Institution Auditorium in the capital and was jointly organized by the Newspaper Owners Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) and the Editors' Council.
Speakers highlighted the importance of unity, professional dignity, and ethical journalism as the media navigates a challenging democratic environment. They called for solidarity and compromise to uphold press freedom and the safety of journalists.
Nurul Kabir, President of the Editors' Council, said, “Institutions are being attacked as the country transitions from an authoritarian system to a democratic process.”
Matiur Rahman, Editor of Prothom Alo, stressed, “Unity and compromise are essential, regardless of differences in opinion, ideology, or disputes, including issues of personal security and professional challenges.”
Mahfuz Anam, Editor of The Daily Star, likened journalism to a “social doctor,” saying, “Journalists highlight society’s limitations, failures, and weaknesses out of love for society. If journalism is controlled for business interests, people will not accept it. Journalism is not just a job; it is a social service profession.”
The meet was attended by leaders and members of NOAB, Editors’ Council, Association of Television Channel Owners, Broadcast Journalist Center, National Press Club, Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists, Dhaka Union of Journalists, Dhaka Reporters Unity, Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Economic Reporters Forum, Photo Journalists Association, Crime Reporters Association, as well as journalists and editors from outside Dhaka.
