Dhaka, May 1, 2026 (V7N) — Labour and Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury has pledged that the government will continue tripartite cooperation among the government, employers, and workers to resolve labour-related issues and expand opportunities in the sector. He made the remarks while presiding over a discussion marking May Day 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka, attended by President Mohammed Shahabuddin as chief guest.

Choudhury emphasized that tripartite cooperation is central to Bangladesh’s labour policy, ensuring fairness, stability, and shared responsibility. “Effective cooperation between workers and employers is essential for implementing labour welfare initiatives,” he said. The minister noted that dialogue and consensus among stakeholders are vital for addressing disputes and fostering a productive workforce.

The minister linked the government’s labour philosophy to the vision of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, who placed the welfare of working people at the heart of national development. He added that under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s leadership, the government is working to ensure workers’ rights, safety, healthcare, and a decent working environment.

Choudhury highlighted recent successes in maintaining labour stability during the last Eid-ul-Fitr. Coordinated policy support ensured timely payment of wages, bonuses, and leave facilities, allowing workers to celebrate with their families. Preparations for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha have already begun, with consultations underway among stakeholders to ensure similar stability. “We are committed to ensuring that workers can celebrate festivals with dignity and security,” he said.

During the programme, compensation cheques of Tk 2 lakh each from the Labour Welfare Foundation were handed over to the families of 13 workers killed in the Mirpur chemical warehouse fire. The gesture underscored the government’s commitment to supporting families affected by workplace tragedies and strengthening occupational safety measures.

Earlier in the day, a colourful May Day rally was brought out, led by the Labour Minister. The procession started from the South Plaza of the National Parliament and ended at the conference centre, symbolizing solidarity with workers worldwide and reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to labour rights.

The programme was attended by advisers to the Prime Minister Nazrul Islam Khan and Mahdi Amin as special guests. International Labour Organization (ILO) Bangladesh Country Director Max Tunon, Bangladesh Employers Federation President Fazle Shamim Ehsan, labour representative Anwar Hossain, and senior officials were also present. Their participation highlighted the collaborative nature of labour policy, involving international partners, employers, and worker representatives.

May Day, observed globally on May 1, commemorates the struggles and achievements of workers. In Bangladesh, it serves as a reminder of the importance of labour rights in national development. The government’s emphasis on tripartite cooperation reflects international best practices, aligning with ILO conventions that promote dialogue among governments, employers, and workers.

Bangladesh’s labour sector has faced challenges in recent years, including industrial accidents, wage disputes, and global market pressures. The government’s focus on stability, safety, and welfare aims to address these issues while ensuring competitiveness in international markets.

Choudhury’s remarks outlined a clear policy vision:
