Saidpur, Dec 30 (V7N) — Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has accused the ruling Awami League of attempting to "anesthetize the nation" by invoking the spirit of independence while exploiting the country's resources and people.

He made these remarks on Sunday night as the chief guest at a roadshow organised by Jamaat-e-Islami at the Central Bus Terminal in Saidpur Upazila. The event saw participation from local and regional leaders of the party.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman alleged that the Awami League, in its 15-and-a-half years in power, has divided the nation and society while creating chaos between majority and minority communities. He accused the ruling party of looting resources, violating the rights of citizens, and smuggling wealth abroad.

“They exploited the spirit of independence to silence the nation while plundering banks, industries, and public assets,” he said, claiming that the government smuggled 26 lakh crore taka abroad during their tenure.

He further criticised the Awami League for suppressing opposition voices, alleging enforced disappearances and targeted killings of opposition leaders. He called the government's rule "fascist" and a "house of mirrors" where people's rights have been systematically taken away.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also highlighted the contributions of the youth in the struggle against the ruling party, saluting their efforts in bringing political change. He criticised the government’s decision to set the voting age at 17, arguing that the youth who fought for freedom deserve the right to vote.

The Jamaat chief emphasised the need for electoral reforms, including an accurate voter list and the inclusion of expatriates as voters, referring to them as "remittance fighters." He expressed hope for a fair election after necessary reforms, stating, "This country belongs to all of us. We will unite to make Bangladesh a garden of equality and peace, free of discrimination."

The roadshow was chaired by Syedpur Upazila Jamaat Ameer Maulana Abdul Muntakim and attended by Jamaat leaders, including Assistant Secretary General Maulana Abdul Halim and Nilphamari District Ameer Principal Maulana Abdus Sattar.

Local community leaders and representatives from various organisations, including Syedpur City Jamaat Ameer Sharfuddin Khan and Syedpur Puja Udayapon Parishad President Raj Poddar Raju, also spoke at the event.

The event concluded with a call for unity among all parties and communities to rebuild the nation.
