Dhaka, Aug 11 (V7N) – Jamaat-e-Islami has welcomed the announcement that Bangladesh’s 13th national elections will be held in the first week of February next year, but emphasized the need for ensuring fairness and voter security.
The party’s Naib-e-Amir, Syed Abdullah Md. Taher, made the remarks after meeting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Sunday afternoon.
“We must move away from the traditional way of holding elections,” Taher said, urging the commission to hold fair polls despite any limitations. He noted that the CEC had assured him the Election Commission is determined to ensure neutrality in the upcoming election and would demonstrate the utmost sincerity in doing so.
Taher also raised objections to the recent expansion of the boundaries of his constituency, Comilla-11, stating that while it already has over 400,000 voters, a new upazila has been added.
