Dhaka, Nov 24 (V7N) – Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has dismissed statements made by its Central Shura member Shahjahan Chowdhury as personal remarks. The party’s Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Shahjahan said in a Sunday statement that disciplinary action is being taken against Chowdhury.
Chowdhury, a former MP, had claimed during a Jamaat event on Saturday that sacks of money and weapons would be brought in from a neighboring country ahead of the elections, and that all local administrative officials should come under their control. His remarks prompted calls from Chattogram BNP for his arrest for attempting to manipulate the administration in Jamaat’s favor.
Jamaat clarified that Chowdhury’s statements do not represent the party and emphasized that they believe the administration will perform its duties professionally without any interference. The statement also noted that those who have failed to act professionally in the past have harmed the country.
Separately, Jamaat Amir Dr. Shafiqur Rahman met with visiting Bhutanese Prime Minister Shering Tobgay at a five-star hotel in Dhaka on Sunday. The meeting was attended by Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, Assistant Secretary General Ehsanul Mahbub Zubayer, and Foreign Affairs Advisor Dr. Mahmudul Hasan.
Later, Jamaat representatives, led by Mia Golam Parwar, met a Commonwealth delegation visiting Dhaka to discuss the need for a free, fair, credible, and fearless electoral environment. Other attendees included Executive Council member Saiful Alam Khan Milon, Matiur Rahman Akand, and central leaders Barrister Mir Ahmed Bin Kasem Arman.
