Dhaka, August 6 — Several top leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were released from prison on Tuesday, following the recent political upheaval in the country. The release of these leaders comes after the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the subsequent changes in the political landscape.

Among those released are BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan, former Minister Ameer Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Senior Joint Secretary-General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, and Health Affairs Secretary Dr. Rafiqul Islam. Additionally, BNP Chairperson's advisor Shimul Biswas and executive committee member Nipun Roy Chowdhury were also freed, along with several other prominent figures.

The releases occurred at various times throughout the day. The move follows discussions held on Monday, August 5, between leaders of various political parties and President Md. Sahabuddin. During the discussions, there was a focus on the release of political detainees, including the leaders of the BNP. The President had indicated that steps would be taken to free political figures, including former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

The released BNP leaders were previously detained on multiple charges, with some serving long prison sentences. Their release marks a significant development in the aftermath of the student-led movement and the political transition in Bangladesh.

In addition to the BNP leaders, individuals arrested in connection with the recent quota reform movement are also being released, as part of broader efforts to stabilize the situation and address public grievances. The political climate in the country remains tense, with calls for unity and reconciliation as Bangladesh navigates this critical period.
