SYDNEY, Feb 6, 2025 (V7N) – Australian all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has announced his immediate retirement from One-Day International (ODI) cricket, leaving Australia with a major selection headache ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and Dubai.
The surprise decision comes as Australia, the reigning 50-over World Cup champions, already faces injury concerns with Mitchell Marsh ruled out due to a back injury and captain Pat Cummins likely sidelined with an ankle problem.
Stoinis, 35, made his ODI debut in 2015 against England at Old Trafford, Manchester, and went on to represent Australia in 74 ODIs. He was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I'm grateful for every moment I've had in the green and gold," said Stoinis.
"I'll be cheering the boys on in Pakistan.
While stepping away from the 50-over format, Stoinis confirmed that he will continue to play T20 cricket for Australia.
This wasn't an easy decision, but I believe it's the right time for me to step away from ODIs and fully focus on the next chapter of my career," he added.
Australia head coach Andrew McDonald praised Stoinis for his contributions, both on and off the field.
"Stoin has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the past decade. Not only has he been an invaluable player but also an incredible person to have in the group."
Cricket Australia also acknowledged his all-round capabilities, noting his aggressive batting style and handy medium-pace bowling, which played a key role in many crucial matches.
With Marsh and Cummins also unavailable, Australia's Champions Trophy squad is now uncertain.
Cricket Australia has confirmed that the final squad for the tournament will be announced after the ongoing Test series against Sri Lanka.
As the Champions Trophy kicks off on February 19, Australia must now find a replacement for one of its most experienced all-rounders.
