Feb 8 (V7N) — Belgium’s Thomas Detry surged to a two-stroke lead at the US PGA Tour Phoenix Open on Friday, carding a superb seven-under-par 64 for a 12-under total of 130 at TPC Scottsdale.

The world No. 58, chasing his first US Tour victory, made eight birdies, bouncing back from a bogey at the 14th with clutch birdies at the 16th and 17th.

Detry sits two strokes ahead of Michael Kim (63) and Alex Smalley (65), both tied at 10-under 132.

Kim closed his round with four straight birdies, calling his eight-under-par 63 a breakthrough moment in his driving consistency.

Smalley made a charge with an eagle at the 13th, but a bogey at 15 cost him a share of the lead.

Three-time major winner Jordan Spieth showed flashes of brilliance, eagling both the 13th and 15th to post a 65, leaving him in a tie for fourth at 9-under 133 alongside Tom Kim (66) and Christiaan Bezuidenhout (66).

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler climbed to 135 (-7) with a bogey-free 66, staying within striking distance.

The Phoenix Open, famous for its raucous crowds, delivered another unforgettable moment when Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo scored a hole-in-one at the iconic 16th. His pitching wedge shot hit the flagstick and dropped straight in, sending fans into a beer-spraying frenzy.

"You always dream of making a hole-in-one there," Grillo said. "It was loud, very loud."
