LIVERPOOL, Feb 13 (V7N) – A stunning 98th-minute equaliser from James Tarkowski salvaged a dramatic 2-2 draw for Everton against Liverpool in the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on Wednesday, sparking chaotic scenes and multiple red cards. The result extended Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points, while Everton moved 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

The match ended in controversy as Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrated provocatively in front of Liverpool fans, leading to a heated altercation. Doucoure and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones were both sent off, followed by Reds manager Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff for protesting referee Michael Oliver’s decisions. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk expressed frustration, calling the last-gasp goal "very disappointing" and criticizing the referee’s inconsistent decisions.

Everton manager David Moyes, in his second spell at the club, hailed the passionate home support, emphasizing the emotional farewell to Goodison Park before their move to a new stadium next season. “It was an old-fashioned throwback,” Moyes said, acknowledging the significance of the occasion for Everton fans eager to step out of Liverpool’s shadow.

The fierce rivalry was evident both on and off the pitch, with visiting Liverpool fans taunting Everton’s 30-year trophy drought by displaying 30 balloons. Moyes, however, remained focused on his long-term vision for the club. “We want to get back to being a big club again,” he stated, underscoring the need to secure Premier League survival before aiming higher.
