Port of Spain, May 17 (V7N) — Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced a significant reshuffle of its leadership ahead of the new World Test Championship cycle. In a surprising move, all-rounder Roston Chase has been appointed as the captain of the West Indies Test team, despite not having played in the format for over two years.

Chase, who last featured in a Test match against South Africa in Johannesburg in March 2023, is set to lead the Caribbean side starting with the upcoming home series against South Africa from June 25. This appointment comes after a thorough evaluation process involving leadership style assessments, psychological testing, and behavioral analysis.

The CWI selected Chase from a shortlist of six candidates that included John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua de Silva, Justin Greaves, and Jomel Warrick. Former captain Craig Braffett stepped down from the Test leadership in late March after leading the team in 39 matches, recording 10 wins, 22 losses, and seven draws.

Chase, a spin all-rounder, has featured in 49 Tests, accumulating 2,265 runs — including five centuries and eleven half-centuries — along with 85 wickets. His new role as captain will coincide with his 50th Test appearance.

Alongside Chase, Jomel Warrick has been named the assistant Test captain as the Windies prepare for a fresh chapter in international cricket.

The decision marks a new direction for West Indies cricket, with hopes pinned on Chase’s leadership to steer the team to success in the highly competitive Test arena.
