KYIV, Ukraine, JUL 10 (V7N): Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrsky has delivered a sober assessment of the ongoing conflict with Russia, cautioning that a definitive turning point in the more than four-year war remains far down the road despite a sequence of major tactical achievements by his forces.
While international analysts and domestic backers increasingly view Ukrainian troops as gaining the upper hand, Syrsky stressed that the Russian military must not be underestimated.
In a comprehensive social media analysis evaluating military operations for the first half of 2026, Syrsky outlined a significant drop in Russian offensive capabilities.
-
Decreasing Frontlines: The number of active offensive sectors across the front line has dropped by half, falling from thirteen operational fronts down to six or seven.
-
Rate of Advance Parity: "In terms of the rate of advance, the two sides have effectively reached parity," Syrsky announced, pointing to a strategy of attrition that has successfully halved the pace of Russian advances since late 2025.
-
Territorial Clawbacks: Data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) confirms this operational shift, noting that Ukrainian counter-offensives successfully recaptured 403 square kilometers (156 square miles) of territory during April and May alone.
Despite the frontline stabilizing, severe friction persists in the eastern Donetsk region. Moscow recently claimed full control over the strategic stronghold of Kostyantynivka, though independent monitors indicate Russian forces have merely infiltrated rather than fully secured the urban center.
Simultaneously, the Kremlin has drastically ramped up air assaults on civilian infrastructure, with Russian missile and drone attacks claiming at least 93 civilian lives and wounding 500 others since the start of July.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky countered that the intensified aerial bombardment represents the "only advantage" remaining for Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting that Kyiv has grown substantially stronger in both ground combat and air defense capabilities.
Highlighting Ukraine’s expanding retaliatory reach, Syrsky revealed that Ukrainian long-range drone and missile units successfully neutralized 697 strategic targets deep inside Russian territory over the past six months, heavily impacting Moscow's domestic oil refineries and supply logistics.
