MEXICO CITY, Feb 12, (V7N) – A tragic road accident in southeastern Mexico claimed the lives of 38 people over the weekend when a truck collided head-on with a passenger bus, officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The crash occurred on Saturday in Campeche state, with 36 victims from the bus and two from the truck, according to state prosecutor Jackson Villacis. Some relatives of the deceased have reported four additional fatalities, but authorities have yet to confirm or locate those bodies.

The accident took place in the Yucatán Peninsula when the truck veered into the bus’s lane, leading to a devastating collision. Both vehicles caught fire, leaving behind little more than charred remains. Initial reports suggested multiple casualties, but this is the first official death toll.

Despite the severity of the crash, nine people survived. The bus, which had departed from Tabasco, was en route to the popular tourist destination of Cancún when the disaster struck.

Videos shared on social media captured harrowing scenes of the burning vehicles, with passengers crying out for help as the flames spread.

Road accidents involving heavy trucks have become increasingly common in Mexico, often attributed to poor vehicle maintenance and drivers who are either overworked or negligent.

In a separate incident, tragedy struck Guatemala on Monday when a bus crashed through a guardrail and plunged into a ravine, killing 54 people. Authorities later revised the death toll, lowering it by one fatality.
