Washington, Mar 3, (V7N) - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that the UK and France will work together on a peace deal for Ukraine, which they plan to present to Donald Trump. The move comes after a tense meeting at the White House on Friday.
Starmer, who is set to host Western leaders in London to discuss reviving peace talks, expressed hope that a "coalition of the willing" in Europe would support Ukraine. However, he stressed that any potential ceasefire must be backed by the United States to prevent further aggression from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
In an interview with BBC television, Starmer stated that the UK and France are leading the efforts in this area, with President Macron and himself developing the plan. Once finalized, the proposal will be discussed with the U.S.
Starmer also reiterated his position that for a European peacekeeping force to be effective, it would require a security guarantee from the United States. "I've always been clear that that is going to need a U.S. backstop, because I don’t think it would be a guarantee without it," he said.
This development follows a series of discussions involving Macron, Trump, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who visited Downing Street on Saturday. The talks aim to find a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, while ensuring the region's security.
