Serbia Mar 04, (V7N) - At least three lawmakers were injured, including one seriously, after chaotic scenes erupted in Serbia’s parliament on Tuesday. Smoke bombs, flares, eggs, and water bottles were thrown during heated clashes between lawmakers, further deepening political tensions in the country.

The unrest unfolded during a session initially scheduled to vote on a law increasing funding for university education. However, opposition lawmakers accused the ruling majority of attempting to approve dozens of additional decisions without confirming the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic and his government.

About an hour into the session, opposition MPs blew whistles and held up banners, one of which read:
“Serbia has risen so the regime would fall!”

Hundreds of opposition supporters rallied outside the parliament building in solidarity.

Video footage from inside the chamber showed violent clashes between lawmakers, with some throwing smoke bombs and flares. Serbian media reported that eggs and water bottles were also hurled during the confrontation.

Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic condemned the opposition’s actions, calling them a “terrorist gang.”
Meanwhile, Defense Minister Bratislav Gasic described the incident as “a disgrace to Serbia.”

“The vandalism of opposition MPs has exposed the nature of their personalities and the essence of their political agenda,” Gasic stated.

Officials confirmed that three people were injured, including lawmaker Jasmina Obradovic, who was rushed to the hospital.

Serbia’s populist President Aleksandar Vucic later visited Obradovic in the hospital and shared an Instagram post from her emergency room.

“Jasmina will win, Serbia will win,” Vucic wrote, posting a photo of himself holding the injured lawmaker’s hand.

The clashes highlight the deepening political divide in Serbia, as tensions continue to escalate ahead of potential snap elections.
