Pabna, Mar 5, (V7N) - Four leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have been issued a show-cause notice by the central BNP leadership after their involvement in an incident of assault and threats to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) in Pabna’s Sujanagor Upazila.

The incident occurred on March 3, 2025, at the office of UNO Mir Rasheduzzaman. It was reported that leaders of the local Jamaat-e-Islami, including the Upazila’s Nayebe Amir, were physically attacked by BNP leaders.

According to the show-cause notice, which was issued on the night of March 4 by BNP’s Senior Joint Secretary Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, BNP leaders Mohammad Mojibur Rahman, Bablu Kha, Mohammad Manik Kha, and Shakil Khan have been accused of creating chaos and engaging in disrespectful behavior. They have been given 24 hours to explain their actions.

The BNP leaders’ actions are said to have occurred when they entered the office to inquire about the suspension of sand extraction, which was reportedly carried out by local authorities. Upon noticing that Jamaat-e-Islami leaders were already waiting in the UNO’s office, the BNP leaders allegedly became upset. The situation escalated when, following a verbal altercation, several BNP leaders physically attacked the Jamaat-e-Islami members with punches and kicks.

The attack was caught on video and spread rapidly on social media, causing a nationwide uproar.

Local BNP leader and convenor of Sujanagor BNP, ABM Toufiq Hassan Alhaj, expressed his disapproval of the incident, calling it unacceptable. He also stated that he had not received any official notice regarding the incident yet.

The UNO, Mir Rasheduzzaman, described the assault as distressing and stated that he had informed senior authorities of the matter. He mentioned that he would file a case once he receives permission from the higher authorities.

On March 3, four Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, including Nayebe Amir Faruk-e-Azam, Secretary Tutul Biswas, former president of the Workers Welfare Federation Waliullah Biswas, and former councilor Mostak Ahmed, had visited the UNO’s office for an official matter. However, due to the UNO being occupied with another task, they were left waiting in the office. This is when the incident involving the BNP leaders occurred.

Authorities are now awaiting further directions on whether legal action will be taken against the perpetrators.
