Sydney, Dec 15 (V7N) – Two gunmen attacked a Jewish festival at Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular coastal areas, on Sunday, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens more, according to Australian authorities. The attack occurred on the first day of Hanukkah and has been declared a terrorist incident by local police.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the shooting as “devastating” and “a targeted attack on Jewish Australians.” He said, “The evil that was unleashed at Bondi Beach today is beyond comprehension, and the trauma and loss that families are dealing with tonight is beyond anyone’s worst nightmare.”

NSW Police stated that around 40 people remain hospitalized following the attack. The shooting sent shock waves across Australia, with widespread grief and heightened security in Sydney and other major cities.

NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon confirmed that one of the shooters, a 50-year-old man, was killed at the scene. His 24-year-old son, who was the second gunman, was taken into custody and is in critical condition. Authorities have stated that they are not searching for a third suspect.

Lanyon revealed that the 50-year-old gunman had six firearms licenses, and six firearms were recovered at the scene. Investigators are conducting ballistics and forensic examinations to determine whether all the firearms belonged to the suspect.

In addition, two rudimentary explosive devices were discovered at the location, though they were inactive. Authorities are investigating whether these devices were intended for further attacks.

Witnesses at Bondi Beach described chaotic scenes as festival attendees fled for safety. Emergency services quickly responded, providing medical assistance and transporting the injured to nearby hospitals.

Security has been significantly increased across Sydney, including public spaces, transport hubs, and major tourist areas, as authorities continue their investigation.

Prime Minister Albanese assured Australians that the government is fully coordinating with NSW Police to ensure a comprehensive response and to provide support to the victims’ families. The attack has drawn international attention, highlighting concerns over rising targeted acts of violence.

Investigators continue to probe the motive and background of the attackers, the planning of the attack, and potential links to extremist networks, while the city remains on high alert.
