Canadian Tourist Killed, MEXICO CITY, April 21, (V7N) — A Canadian woman was shot dead and 13 others injured Monday when a gunman opened fire at Mexico’s famed Teotihuacan archaeological site, authorities said.

Cristobal Castaneda, security secretary for Mexico state, confirmed the attacker killed himself after firing on tourists at the Pyramid of the Moon. Six people were wounded by gunfire, including a Canadian woman, a Colombian woman and child, a Brazilian, and two Americans. Seven more were hurt in the scramble for safety, among them a Russian, a Colombian, a Brazilian, and four Americans.

The midday attack stunned visitors at one of Mexico’s most popular pre-Hispanic sites, less than two months before the World Cup begins in Mexico, the US, and Canada. AFPTV footage showed a body being carried down the pyramid steps under a white sheet.

Authorities seized a firearm, knife, and unused ammunition, evacuating tourists from the complex. Federal police and the national guard were dispatched to secure the area.

Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand condemned the incident as “a horrific act of gun violence.” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called for a full investigation, saying: “What happened today in Teotihuacan deeply pains us.”

Built more than 2,000 years ago, Teotihuacan attracted 1.8 million visitors in 2025. While Mexico struggles with gang violence, mass shootings at tourist sites are rare.
