RANGPUR, June 20, 2026 (v7n)– The Teesta Master Plan Implementation Movement Committee (TMPIMC) held human chains in various areas of the Teesta riverbanks in greater Rangpur on Saturday, demanding speedy implementation of the Teesta Master Plan (TMP). As part of the programme held simultaneously, human chains were arranged at 10 points in Rangpur city and five other points across the district alone, drawing participation from local leaders, activists, and residents.
Several Members of Parliament addressed the human chains at different points. Gaibandha-2 MP Abdul Karim, Rangpur Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer ATM Azam Khan, and NCP District Convener Al Mamun spoke at the Kachari Bazar point in Rangpur city, where Engineer Arifur Rahman Arif, an adviser of the TMPIMC, presided. Gaibandha-1 MP Professor Majedur Rahman Majed spoke at the Rangpur Press Club point, while Rangpur-1 MP Raihan Siraji addressed the longest human chain from the Burirhat point to the Mohipur Teesta Road Bridge in Gangachara upazila.
The human chains were held at multiple locations across Rangpur district, including Lalbagh More, DC More, Kawnia Teesta Bridge, Mohipur Teesta Bridge, and Burirhat Bazar. In Lalmonirhat, Kurigram MPs Barrister Mahbubul Alam Salehi and Anwarul Islam participated in a human chain in the Shailmari Char area of Kaliganj upazila. Nilphamari MPs spoke at human chains from the Kakra area of Jaldhaka upazila to the Teesta Barrage Project in Dimla upazila.
The speakers said everyone knows about the suffering of the people on the banks of the Teesta. For years, only promises have been made with no visible progress, and now people want to see the start of project implementation rather than just assurances. They demanded that the government ensure funds are allocated for the TMP in the revised budget.
The TMPIMC believes there is no alternative to rapid implementation of the TMP for sustainable development of the region. The plan is directly related to the livelihoods, agriculture, river erosion prevention, and environmental protection of millions of people living alongside the Teesta riverbanks. Its implementation would help increase agricultural production, prevent erosion, create employment, and improve the quality of life for local residents.
