Dhaka, Sep 08 (V7N) – Bangladesh has observed ‘World Cystic Fibrosis Day’ for the first time, aiming to raise awareness among doctors, patients, and the public about the rare but life-threatening genetic disease. The Chest and Heart Association of Bangladesh organized a seminar at the National Cancer Hospital in Dhaka on Monday morning.

Speakers noted that cystic fibrosis was once considered a disease affecting only Europeans with fair skin. However, cases are now being increasingly identified in Bangladesh. Due to limited awareness, many doctors previously misdiagnosed cystic fibrosis as asthma, pneumonia, or tuberculosis.

Medical experts at the seminar urged parents to consult specialists if children suffer from frequent cough, breathing difficulties, or irregular bowel movements. They stressed that both doctors and the general public must be alert to the disease for timely diagnosis and treatment.

Cystic fibrosis is a fatal congenital condition caused by genetic defects. It damages multiple organs, including the lungs, pancreas, liver, digestive system, and reproductive system. While historically more prevalent in Europe and America, cases are now emerging in Asia, including Bangladesh.
